FLAG FOOTBALL

2/3 Flag
Grades 2-3

This 8-week co-ed program for grades 2–3 is designed to introduce young athletes to the game in a fun, supportive environment while building a strong foundation of basic skills.

The season begins at the beginning of September and runs for 8 weeks, with participants attending two practices per week and one game on the weekend, held on either Saturday or Sunday. Teams will play a mix of home and away games, with home games taking place at our West Cumberland field and away games held at fields throughout the Greater Portland area. Game schedules are organized by a scheduling committee made up of participating local towns.

This is a non-contact league, meaning there is no tackling in flag football. Throughout the season, players will learn beginner concepts of flag football, including fundamental rules, teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill development. All participants are required to wear cleats and a mouthguard.

Practices are held twice weekly at the coach’s discretion and are subject to weather conditions. We coordinate schedules at the beginning of the year to ensure players can balance their commitments and accommodate other sports.

4/5 Flag
Grades 4-5

This 8-week co-ed program for grades 4–5 is the next step for players building on the fundamentals learned in the 2–3 beginner program. While the focus remains on learning, athletes will develop their skills at a faster pace, with an increased emphasis on game awareness, teamwork, and execution. Players will continue improving their understanding of football rules and formations, along with throwing, catching, and agility.

This is a non-contact league; there is no tackling at this level. Participants will attend two practices per week, with games held on Saturdays at fields throughout the Greater Portland area. Cleats and mouthguards are required.

6-8 Flag
Grades 6-8

This new 8-week co-ed program for grades 6–8 is designed for players ready to take the next step by building on the skills developed in earlier years and applying them in a more competitive team setting.

Athletes will focus on fully utilizing their knowledge of the game while continuing to develop teamwork, game awareness, and execution at a higher level. This is a Greely Flag team that will represent the school while competing against other schools, providing a more structured and competitive experience. All games will be played in Portland, and the program will have the ability to field both 12U and 14U teams in partnership with the Maine Flag Football League. This remains a non-contact league with no tackling. Cleats and mouthguards are required.
